Summary, etc The eighth edition of this textbook has been extensively revised to encompass the most important advances of the past six years. In addition to a systematic overhaul of all the sections on general medicine - in particular the nervous, alimentary, respiratory and urinary systems - the following important changes have been introduced: the section on equine colic has been completely rewritten; the parts of the book concerning bovine mastitis and coliform mastitis have been thoroughly revised; and information of diseases of the new-born and colostrum has been expanded and updated. New disease covered are bovine spongiform encephalopathy, borreliosis, blue-eared disease of pigs, hyperkalemic periodic paresis, frostbite in calves and weak calf syndrome; and exotic diseases include foot and mouth disease, vesicular stomatitis, rinderpest, trypanosomiasis, heart water, theileriosis and East Coast fever have all been expertly revised. Additionally, all information on epidemiology, particularly of the infectious diseases, has been reorganized for easier access and subdivided into important categories, among them various measures of disease occurrence, methods of transmission, immune mechanisms and - most important of all - risk factors, which provide the veterinarian with an effective tool to control and prevent infectious diseases. "Veterinary Medicine" remains an important textbook on farm animal medicine. Its logical user-friendly organization, and its breadth of coverage in a compact and clear style combined with its strong emphasis on the clinical decision-making process make it a useful resource for both student and practitioner.
