1. This dictionary of eight international languages and multi-purpose reference book is specifically meant for international travelers and learners of foreign languages. From ambassadors to housewives, from doctors to bankers, every segment of overseas living community will find it useful. Written from the viewpoint of a learner, it still covers those areas (like tenses for some very common verbs) which offer the greatest problem to the learner of a foreign language and are very conveniently overlooked even by some professional reference works. 2. Despite its brevity, it is guaranteed not to lack in utility. In one compact volume, here you have a book which either augments or replaces sixty-four dictionaries, seven phrase books, seven pronunciation and grammar guides, seven books for tenses. 3. This book would be useful to anybody who has ever had some interest in any of the eight languages. It should prove a worthwhile investment to an international traveler. 4. A MUST FOR EVERY HOUSEHOLD IF NOT FOR EVERY PERSON 5. This book should be suitable for the following:- (a) A beginner who wants to learn the language by practical experiences and directly. (b) An amateur who has had some literary or practical experience of a foreign language. He will find this book a compact reference companion for day to day use. (c) Any one who is multilingual in the languages given but has problem in finding the right word for the right occasion. 6. This multilingual dictionary covers all major important international languages. It can be used to move in between any of the eight languages which are English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic and Esperanto. Esperanto is a synthetic language which is becoming increasingly popular as a world auxiliary language. 7. The basic dictionary section lists all the important and frequently used words in English which are required for normal daily usage. An extensive research was carried out and effort has been made to include most useful words which could convey the meaning without any ambiguity. To achieve brevity, those words whose meaning could be better conveyed by a more appropriate word found elsewhere in the dictionary were excluded. This section comprises of about five thousand English headwords. It may be noted here that a vocabulary of about two thousand words is considered sufficient to carry out normal conversation. 8. If translation for a word is required which is not included in the dictionary, there would always be an alternate word of similar meaning included in the dictionary. For example, instead of looking for `abduct , you may look for `kidnap' to convey your meaning. Similarly, instead of going in for `abdomen , you should look for `stomach'. To derive full benefit from this compact dictionary, a certain amount of mental jugglery may have to be used to look for translation of less important words. Later, I plan to write a small mini-thesaurus to act as a guide for finding substitute words of similar meaning. 9. Against the English language headword, the most appropriate and useful foreign language word is given. Each language has its own column. It is humanly impossible to translate a word from one language to another language perfectly because a word may have different usage and connotation in the other language. Sometimes an alternate word following a full-stop is also given. The choice of foreign language word was therefore dictated by keeping the following points in view listed in the order of priorities. (a) Utility in daily life (b) Easiness of the word. (c) Accuracy (d) Compatibility with other languages. (e) Non-ambiguity. (f) Generality of its usage. (g) Resemblance to English word. (h) Expansion of vocabulary.
